Percutaneous Vertebroplasty
- What is Percutaneous Vertebroplasty?: Percutaneous vertebroplasty is performed in patients with compression fracture. Compared to traditional procedure which makes incision in the skin under the general anesthesia, during this procedure, artificial bon components are injected with a biopsy needle penetrating skin into vertebra that provides stabilization of fractured bone under the local anesthesia. .
- Characteristics: The most prevalent fracture due to osteoporosis is pressure fracture which causes a sharp pain at flank and back, especially becomes severe when one in supine position tries to turn toward side or lift up body. Also, life-threatening complications such as pneumonia and septicemia can be resulted from.
- Pathogenesis: Osteoporosis is especially problematic among women after menopause. Prevalence of osteoporosis significantly increases in late 50 year old. Osteoporosis is the most representative elderly disorder which 80% of elderly populations in 70~80 year old have suffered and bone density due to calcium loss leads to fractures of bone even with minor impingement.
- Treatment Methods: For vertebroplasty, gel-type bone enhancements are injected into the fractured vertebra to generate artificial bone. With 3~5 hours of bed rest after injection, patient can move freely and be discharged from the hospital after 1~2 days. Procedure is performed under the local anesthesia that can be applied to the patients with hypertension and diabetes. Anyone who can tolerate in prone position for 1 hour can be treated.
- Effectiveness: This procedure treats nerves effectively through heat at high temperature generated by artificial bone components. With 1 day of bed rest after injection, patient can move freely and be discharged from the hospital going back to the daily activity after 1~2 days.
- Advantages: The cost of vertebroplasty is half of that of the traditional procedure and can be finished within 30 minutes. Also, performing in local anesthesia eliminates the needs of additional visit after surgery.
Radiofrequency Ablation
- Radiofrequency ablation: In radiofrequency ablation, catheters attached with electronic leads are inserted through fine needle holes at problematic discs and heat of 65~90 ℃ is generated which destroys nerves and vessels causing pain to result in the transformation of discs to change their shapes.
- Characteristics: Most important characteristic of radiofrequency ablation is the ability that determines the right problematic disc correctly. Therefore, this procedure is performed using auto positioning system and endoscopy which guide injection needle to the disc.
- Pathogenesis: Intervertebral discs act as shock absorber between adjacent vertebrae in the spine and consist of strong fibrocartilage. However, wear or tear of intervertebral disc over the time leads to chronic lumbar pain.
- Procedure: This procedure uses high frequency similar with hepatic cancer, which lead-attached needles is placed inside vertebral discs through the vertebral muscle. This causes generation of radiofrequency that shrink discs and strengthens fibercartilage of discs. This tissue extrudes outside between adjacent vertebras and makes disc applying pressure to nerve to shrink and prevent reccurence.
- Advantages: Procedure can be completed within 15 minutes under the local anesthesia, so that it is recommended to elderly patients. Also, Radiofrequency temperature is low to minimize the damage to the adjacent tissue and to enable accurate procedure. In some clinical study in America, this procedure achieved 81% of treatment effectiveness.

Atopic dermatitis was developed before 13 years and became inducing serious pruritis that could not take cloths or go outside before 3 years. Insomnia due to serious pruritis. She was suffering from the discharge running all over the body, so she had to peel off keratinized cuticles continuously. Not respond to the dermatology clinic. She complaints attempting suicide for long pain. For 1 month taking of oriental medicinal herbs, discharge and pruritis become disappeared, and she sleeps well at night and can perform normal daily activities.
2. Cerebral infarction (43 yr, female)
Left upper and lower paralysis due to cerebral infarction were treated for 80 days in other general hospital, and then visited to NIH. Performed combination therapy with acupuncture, moxibustion, oriental medicinal herb and rehabilitation therapy. 2 month later from starting of inpatient treatment, she could stand and walk holding safety side rail of the wall.
After 3 months, she could move around alone with support and arm, leg, dysarthria were improved.
3. Systemic skin purpura (45 yr, male)
Symptoms including edema, keratinization, pruritis, jaundice, hepatitis were treated inpatient in other general hospital for 15 days but got worse, and then visited NIH. Stop taking all of western medicine and start acupuncture and prescription of oriental medicinal herbs. At 7 days, edema was disappeared and reduced 12 kg of weight that could be considered as improvement of conditions. Also, keratinized cuticles were almost disappeared and albumin level returned back normal value.
4. Hyun-Min (5 yr, male)
He was premature infant and was suffered from the consistent pain and crying due to convulsive epilepsy and could not support head position.
Weight was 6.5 kg at that time, considering absolute diet and sleep deprivation. After 50 days therapy with acupuncture, moxibustion, oriental medicinal herb, epilepsy symptoms were significantly decreased that improved night sleep condition, reduced crying and made easier to ejaculate sputum or cough. Weight gain due to increased diet size.
After 2 months treatment, diet size and sleep time returned back to normal conditions. Epileptic convulsion was disappeared and weight gained to 10 kg.
