Overview

The National Institute of Medical Rehabilitation as one of the firsts gave place to medical rehabilitation and physical medicine undergraduate and postgraduate study programs in Hungary. By the experiences gained over the years we became aware that certain most necessary topics in rehabilitation including orthopedics, surgery or amputee rehab, traumatic and spinal cord injuries, hemiplegia, brain injuries, bone and joint infections, TBC, rehabilitation of patients with different disabilities and other procedures or therapy methods.

Department of Orthopedics

The Deparment undertakes the duties of making primary hip and knee prothesis, orthopedic corrective surgeries, sometimes makes extremity amputations for patients suffering of cancerous diseases, supplies them with artificial extremities, as well as correction surgeries for patients with spinal cord- and central neurosystem injuries, this promotes their successful rehabilitation. The Ward is located in Wing C with 20 active beds.

Surgical and Rehabilitation Department of Amputations

The Department is the first and only surgical unit in the country specialized on amputations. Most of the patients receive upper or lower extremity amputation due to artherosclerotical necrosis and malignant tumor. In a smaller number of cases the ward attends patients with traumatic amputation, and others with need of amputation or bone correction due to congenital extremity disorders. Besides these, the Department undertakes conservative and surgical attendance of diabetic ulceration, and other patients attending locomotor rehabilitation (e.g. spinal cord injuries) in need of current emerging septic surgery. After the amputation surgery the patient´s rehabilitation takes place on the operative ward, in the Mixed Profile, or the Department of Amputation Rehabilitation. The surgical attendance of patients from the different wards of the institute is also done in the Ward. The Ward is located with 20 active beds in Wing C.

Rehabilitation Department of Traumatic Injuries

The nationally acclaimed Department attends severe, multiply injured and traumatic amputated patients, and in a minor number of cases takes care of the rehabilitation of patients following big joints prosthesis surgery. The remaining capacity focuses on elderly patients with hip (pericoxal) fractures. If necessary it is possible to make certain operations to enhance the patient’s successful rehabilitation. The Ward is located in the main building, in wing B, 1st floor with 40 beds.

Rehabilitation Department of Spinal Cord Injuries

The task of the Department is to develop and maintain the spinal cord injured patients’ self-sufficiency on the highest possible level. Its duty includes the complex primary rehabilitation of patients with early spinal cord injuries, the prevention of complications related to their injury, improvement of life quality, and the preventive control of patients with older injuries, as well as their solution and healing treatment in case of complications. Also, an education of lifestyle with spinal cord injuries is taught. The Ward is located n the main building, in wing B, on the ground floor with 40 beds and wing C with 10 beds.

Rehabilitation Department of Hemiplegics

The Department treats patients who suffer from hemiplegia due to a stroke or other acute, non-traumatic brain damage (e.g. operation, tumor, brain abscess, anoxia) in its rehabilitation program. These patients have a global injury (e.g. abasia, self-sufficiency deficits) following acute treatment. They are able to undergo the amount of physical and mental strain necessary for rehabilitation. After the primary rehabilitation program which follows the given acute brain damage (most often stroke) due to different reasons the patients might be involved later in another rehabilitative attendance. The Ward is located in the main building, in wing B on the 2nd floor of with 40 beds.

Rehabilitation Department of Brain Injuries

The main duty of the Department is the medical rehabilitation of patients who suffered traumatic brain injury. The treatment of the temporary or definitive function deficits due to the damage (hemiplegia, movement or walking deficits, deficits of nutrition, swallowing, communications, continence, and psychic problems) is done by team work. The ward also undertakes patients with other brain damage, such as stroke or other patients in need of neuro-rehabilitation (e.g. post-surgery, anoxia, sclerosis multiplex, neuropathia, Guillan-Barre syndrome). The quality assurance of the ward is recognized by the European Union of Medical Specialist (EUMS), and since November of 2006 posses’ accreditation. The Ward is located in the main building, in wing A on the 2nd floor with 40 beds and in wing C with 8 beds.

Department of Bone and Joint Infection and TBC Rehabilitation

The Department undertakes operative and non-operative care of purulent bone-joint diseases, post-traumatic bone infections, septic non-union bone fractures, infected articular endoprosthesis and diabetic feet alterations. Operative and non-operative treatment for bone-joint tubercolosis provided by the Department with different locations is unique in the country. The operative therapy of the above diseases, the diabetic neuropathic foot ulcers and deformity and bone-joint alterations, as well as serious necrosis of the lower extremities due to arteriosclerosis is undertaken by surgeons of the Department. The postoperative therapy and rehabilitation of dysvascular amputees also belongs to the duties of the Department. The Ward is located in the main building, in wing A, on the 1st floor with 40 beds.

Rehabilitation Ward of patients with different dysabilities

The Department undertakes the therapy of patients suffering from different neurological, locomotor diseases, traumatic injuries, following vertebrae and bone-joint surgery, and the most possible earliest rehabilitation of children over 10 years of age, as well as the complex treatment of lymphoedemic diseases. The Department offers its services as inpatient or as daytime hospital attendance regarding to the state of the patient. The quality assurance of the Department is recognized by the European Union of Medical Specialist (UEMS), and posses’ accreditation. The Ward is located in the main building, in wing A on the 3rd floor with 40 beds.

Day Care Hospital

On workdays from 7am to 2pm the Day Care Hospital undertakes the rehabilitation of patients suffering from locomotor diseases, where the amount of function damage makes the visit of the Ward possible day to day. The daytime hospital attendance is the part of the medical attendance of the hospital, what gives the opportunity for the use of medical rehabilitation services for the patients. The task of the attendance in the Ward besides the decrease of current locomotor complains with the help of the different complex, mechano-physiotherapy, is the reach of the possible mobility with the continuous increase of physical strain, reaching self-sufficiency and psychotic balance. By offering lifestyle couching, activity promoting counseling the Ward helps patients to function in everyday situations or keeps the level of their activity. The complex treatment usually takes 3 weeks. The Day Care Hospital is located in Pavilion IV. with 30 beds.

Lymphoedema Unit

The duty of the department is the therapy of lymphoedemic patients with the help of manual and mechanical drainage. The task of the attendance is the volume decrease of extremities, what causes the significant improvement of the patient’s mobility, and the decrease of strain on the extremities. Of course during the treatments the health professionals of the Ward reflect to the patient’s needs caused by individual problems. The specialty consultation is located in the main building, in wing A on the 3rd floor.

Department of Radiology

The Department of Radiology performs diagnostic X-ray and ultrasound examinations primarily for patients having locomotors disease, disabled or handicapped, and after locomotor surgery in postoperative states. Orientated by the profile of our Institute the main duty of the Department is to diagnose the orthopedic and rheumatoid diseases, determine the conditions following traumatic injury, follow the healing process, locate the positions of implanted surgical metals, ascertain inflammatory bone and joint processes, and its control before and after reconstructive surgery, as well as to judge and follow the emerging complications in consequence of neurological damage. The Department of Radiology is located in the Main Building, ground floor.

Ergometry

The Ergometric Laboratory of the Institute makes strain monitoring based on the physiological parameters of performance. The professionals check whether the patient is capable or not to undergo conditioner gymnastic, give advice on the type of gymnastic, its intensity and length. Besides this it makes check ups for different metabolic processes (blood gas analysis, breathing functions, oxygen uptake functions, and measurement of pulse number and blood pressure in rest and under load) for patients of different wards. The Ergometric Laboratory is located in the main building, in wing A on the ground floor.

Central Department of Hydrotherapy and Sport Therapy

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy, as a collective concept, means all kinds of therapies done with water. Packs, drinking cures, whirl and thermal baths, and subaqual gymnastics belongs here. Orientated by the profile of the National Institute of Medical Rehabilitation the department relies on the effect of the subaqual movement therapy in developing the damaged functions. Due to the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic qualities of water the health professionals are able to attend their patients individually and in groups as well. Their task among others is to let their patients reach the level of independent experiences in water. May it be a movement, a change of posture or position, or execution of swimming motion, even individually. The Department of Hydrotherapy is located in the wing E of the main building.

Central Gym – Department of Sport Therapy

The sport therapy is an additional activity build on the movement therapy undergoing in the rehabilitative wards, which builds on the physical activity of the patients. The therapists develop the cooperative patients’ left over physical qualities (strength, endurance, movement coordination, joint flexibility). They help them to reach the most possible independence in the solution of tasks in everyday life. They choose their patients according to medical indication, and work only with patients able to undergo a certain amount of strain needed for rehabilitation. The patients use their service in groups (according to the schedule), but do individual exercises regarding to their diagnosis, state of movement, contraindications and other parameters (sex, age, muscle strength, body weight, psychic status, motivations, etc.) The Central Gym – Department of Sport Therapy is located in the main building, in wing F.

Central Department of Occupational Therapy

The Department of Occupational Therapy offers its service based on the medical indication of the wards. The primery task of occupational therapy within the locomotor rehabilitation is to try out different activities, and its relearning if needed. These activities are related to self-sufficiency, work-like activities, and so called recreational, leisure time activities. The treatments offer an opportunity to practice the solutions and tools needed to perform the activities. The sample home equipped in the Occupational Therapy gives important information and shows useful ideas for the configuration of a barrier-free home environment. In order to the most independent execution of the aimed activities, the development of upper extremity functions and cognitive functions belongs to the department also. The Central Occupational Therapy is located in wing D of the main building.

Central Laboratory

The Laboratory is responsible for examinations for the inpatient care wards of the Institute, for its ambulances, and for the Central Consultation Office. It passes the examination materials to the Hungarian National Public Health and Medical Officer Service (ÁNTSZ), takes care of its administration, as well as takes part in the prevention of hospital infections (infection control). Twice a year takes part in organizing the blood donation campaign of the Institute. The Central Laboratory is located in Pavilion IV

Anesthesiology Service

The Anesthesiology Service of the Institute attends the perioperative (the intervals before, during and after the operative period) care and operative anesthesia of the patients in need of surgery. Besides the preoperative examination and information, it helps in the psychic and pharmaceutical preparation of the patients. During the surgery it takes care of the general anesthesia of the patients, as well as controls his/her pulmonal and cardiac status. After the surgery it advises the necessary painkillers, and the quantity of fluid and blood supplements. The Anesthesiology Service is located in wing C.

Orthopeadic Workshop

The Workshop gives place to the creating of prosthesis, orthesis and sometimes other medical aids customized for the patients of the Institute. The rehabilitative medical specialist prescribes the aids on their ward or on the ambulant consultation based on the operative laws. The Workshops is located in the main building, in wing B in the basement.

Pharmacy

The duty of the Pharmacy is to organize the pharmaceutical provisions, in an economic and proper way regarding to quantity and quality, of the patients attended in the wards and specialty ambulances. It takes care of the supplement of medicines, bandages, chemicals, disinfectants, disposable tools, and incontinency products, keeping them in stock, and organized giving out. The Central Pharmacy is located in the main building, in wing B, in the basement.
